Behind the Lens
I think I was born with creativity running through my veins… but for over 3 decades, I was an artist without a medium. I tried many things over the years, from art and craft, to drawing and painting, and even writing. But nothing seemed to gel. I always loved photography, from the very first instamatic I took away on 4th grade camp, to the High Schools 35mm SLR, I borrowed and played official school reporter, recording all the most important scholastic events. At one point in my early 20′s, I even imaged that I might be able to be a photographer. I went to the Photography Institute to inquire about enrolment, but backed out at the last minute, for fear of not being able to make the grade.
In the years to come I still loved to snap things on holidays. I never really understood the point of going somewhere different and exciting unless you were going to photograph it. I thought I was just recording the events of my life… I still didn’t see that this is what I was born to do. Any time I saw a person without a camera, I just didn’t get it. I still don’t.
Finally at age 45. My youngest son bought himself a digital SLR. I was excited for him, and secretly envious of his new purchase. I borrowed it every chance I could, just to experiment and take pictures in my garden. Finally my son decided that he was never going to get the same enjoyment out of the camera that I was, and he allowed me to have it. I was so excited.
A few months later my husband and I went on a trip to the USA. I was snapping everything in sight, naturally. We stopped at several of those Tourist Information Centres and took brochures away with us. Whilst riffling through the pages of the glossy tourist magazines, a thought occurred to me…. someone is taking those pictures! Why couldn’t that someone be me?
I came back home to Australia and started Tracie Louise Photography.
That was 15 months ago. In that time, I have eaten, slept, breathed, and absorbed all things photographic. My style has developed into something hopefully a little unique and definitely much more artistic than it once was. It’s still early days for me yet. But to say that I have found my passion would be an understatement of epic proportions. I spent literally decades trying to figure out what I was “meant” to be doing with my life, when it was under my nose the entire time. Finally a clarity that only comes with hindsight.
And this experience of not discovering my passion until relatively later in life, pushes me to inspire others to find theirs, much sooner. I have never had a dream before, a goal, a mission. And so I am driven by the idea of influencing others to reach for their own stars, whatever they may be. Whether you are a teenager or you are in your 80′s, it is never to late to peruse a dream, to be all that you were meant to be. My hope is that my images inspire others to seek beauty where they might not otherwise see it. And to share a little of myself and the way that I look at things along the way.”

I currently sell my work through RedBubble. If you would like to make a purchase, please take a look at my portfolio and visit visit my RedBubble page.

Hey Tracie Louise! I made my first purchase this morning; “Cleveland Pier”! I sent you a short message at the ‘contact’ section but don’t know if I got the thing posted. Thanks for stopping by Cry and Howl.
Steve
I did get the email, and I sent one back to you… THANK YOU SO MUCH… I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you doing that. I really hope you enjoy your new print just as much as I enjoyed capturing it for you. It was an amazing day with a wonderful friend holding the umbrella over my head. I had wanted to see that pier for a long time, so it was really exciting for me.
So big hugs to you Steve, for being so kind and so generous. I’m adding your site to the blog roll and a small way of saying “Thank You” ♥
Thank you Tracie Louise! I’ll be making more purchases as time continues on. I admire your work very much and know getting set up and catching the exact moment of a great photograph is very challenging.
Thank you for adding my site to your blog roll, though you might want to think about “soiling” your very classy site with something like Cry And Howl.
Anyway, I hope you’re having a great weekend, and thank you very much for your most welcomed reply.
Too late… already soiled
As much as I believe in and promote truth and beauty, I also believe in telling it like you see it… I believe VERY much in holding “the powers that be” accountable. And I fight tooth and nail for everyone’s right to self-expression.
Thank you! Sometimes my “self-expression” will get somewhat crass, but what can a Texan do?
I’ve been thinking of featuring your site via a blog post soon. I do that occasionally when I find a site that I find interesting and I think people should pay attention to. Such as http://1boyuso.com/ and http://usneakydevilu.com/
So, don’t be surprised to see that perhaps this week.
Thank you again Tracie Louise!
Steve
Thanks for that Steve.. that would be AWESOME…. oh and btw… my hubby was living in TX when we met. Been there many times. And believe me… rural Queensland is very much like TX. I doubt very much that there would be anything you could say that would surprise me
Just a note to let you know I received the print last night. It’s great! Thank you! I surely hope you and your family have a great weekend!
Cool! I’ll do something this week.
I am very inspired by your amazing photography, and I have decided to pass on the One Lovely Blog Award to you! Enjoy!

Thank you Marney.. that’s very sweet of you.
Your work is stunning. There’s actually no word I can think of to sum it up – everything from the colour to the composition. You really are talented and I’m so glad (reading your post about Living on Purpose) that you came out of your shell and found a creative medium that works for you.
I’m always looking for visual “prompts” for my writing, so I suspect I’ll be back on your blog before very long

Thank you so much xxoo
You’re welcome, Tracie
I loved the part about you not seeing the point of going somewhere unless you could photograph it. That’s me, too, and others don’t seem to get it. Last time in Sydney, I wouldn’t go on the “climb Sydney bridge” tour b/c the tour information said visitors are NOT allowed to take photographs from the top. And just recently I cancelled a tour of Windsor Castle for the same reason. The camera is an extension, not only of my hand, but also my mind, as I’m sure it is for you, too.. I am lost without it. Thank you for finding my blog. I’m very glad I was led to yours.
Thank you so much for your visit…. I did the Story Bridge climb in Brisbane even though I couldn’t take the camera… and it almost killed me not to be able to capture what I was seeing… but I wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything. But ordinarily, I seriously don’t see the point in going anywhere without the camera. Thanks again xxoo
Pope Benedict wasn’t Pope until in his seventies. Mother Teresa was a famous elderly nun who loved everybody. President Lincoln was homely but the best US President we ever had. God gives us all a talent or two or some people get 10 talents. We must use them for God and others, or we can bury them. It’s our choice to make. But, God will be upset if we bury our talents. I have to remember this myself. I am extremely fearful probably due to abuses, so I tend to bury my talents. Keep up this excellent career. Even if it is an avocation, you’re doing what God wants. Just take it, as God sends it. YOUR PHOTOS ARE AWESOME!!!!
Thank you so much… and I totally agree… I DO believe this is a God given gift, and it would extremely disrespectful not to make the most of it
Yup!
Your photos are exceptional with its own style, bright colors just super nice!
Thank you Ann
Love your images. I too am dabbling in photography and am looking at selling images, though I haven’t gotten that far yet. I too started photography young, with a high school course, but never considered it as something I was supposed to do. For me it was also simply, documentation. Then my father died, and something changed; shifted, fell into place. Writing is also a passion, and at 48, I’m finally going to give this whole thing a whirl. So very nice to meet you! I look forward to more lovely images from you. Am going to have a look around your site now!
Welcome to site… hope you enjoy your time here. I wish you all the very best with pursuing your dreams. I firmly believe that you can do whatever you set you heart to
Your story is amazing and your photography blows me away ~ every image is so stunning! I really enjoy seeing every new post. Thank you!
That is a really lovely thing to say….. Thank You so much xxoo
I used your photograph of a bird as a subject. It was given as a gift and I didn’t have time to scan it, however, I will try to retrieve it so I can add it to my gallery on my site. I think you’ll like it! i used the bird at the top of your post “acceptance”: http://tracielouisephotography.net/2012/04/19/acceptance-2/
OH.. I would just love to see it. I feel very honoured that you used my pic as inspiration… thank you xxoo
You are very talented! Your photographs are stunning!
You are very kind to say so… thanks so much
Gorgeous photos!
I have seen so many good or bad phptographers so I know what i say ::)
A good thought to yiou!
I made some wrong spelling here, as I can´t see properly what´s comking out on this writing section
Tracie Louise, thank you for liking my blog. I really like your images and your layout, too.. But I also relate to your story because for me, too, photography has always something I have enjoyed to experiment with, even though I have never taken a class, and that digital SLR is still a dream at this point. Keep going, learning, and experimenting! And I agree: Don’t ever go anywhere without a camera!
Thanks so much… I hope one day you get your DSLR.. it certainly changed my life and opened up a whole new world for me… much love to you xxoo
You take amazing photographs…quite inspiring! Thank you for stopping by our new blog
Although now I’m rather embarrassed by my shoddy photography skills.
Don’t ever say that… we all started somewhere. The fact that you are out there doing your thing and expressing yourself is absolutely AWESOME as far as I am concerned.
Very inspiring, wishing you the best from the USA!
Thank you Michael
all the best…I agree with you….I don’t feel like going anywhere special..unless I have the opportunity to shoot…!!…love your photos….keep shooting…
Thanks so much…. more often than not, I only go places, so that I can shoot
I’ve nominated you for the Daydreamer Award (seemed to fit). I take forever to do these posts and now I’ve officially quit so however you want to take this is okay by me: http://bluegrassnotes.wordpress.com/2012/07/08/more-awards-and-official-no-more-awards-notice/
I never participate in these awards just because it would take up so much time, but I always appreciate the sentiment and they always make me smile….. thank you so much xxoo
The main reason I nominate any blog is to send some traffic, which I consider the main point — I totally get not wanting to be bothered which is why I’ve asked not to be nominated any more… You’re so welcome!
And that is why I totally appreciate the gesture… Apart from the fact that it is nice to be considered worthy… I totally appreciate the extra traffic… so thank you once again… I really do appreciate being nominated
so happy for you Tracie! youre story is so inspirational and one I closely relate to!
Xoox
I’m glad
WOW! Great pictures – you are so talented.
Thank you for such a lovely comment
The oldest member in my photography school the year I attended was 75, the youngest 18. Pursuing dreams isn’t age-related. It’s a matter of intention. Much like good photography!
SO TRUE!!!!! Thanks for sharing that.
Hi Tracie! Thank you so much for stopping by my blog…….I was able to find you and I have to say…I AM BLOWN AWAY….You are the best photographer I’ve ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May I ask what equipment you use…I’m very happy with my Nikon D300….but I always want to file away info so that when I’m ready to make a change, I have a point of reference…again,,,you have an amazing gift…Thanks for sharing it with everyone!
Well… firstly WOW… thanks for that amazing compliment. I use a Nikon D90. I started off with the D40 that my son gave me, and upgraded to the D90. I would dearly love a full frame camera, and one day will own one. The camera body is important, of course, but far more important is get good glass. I really good lens can make a world of difference. Thanks again for such a wonderful comment. xxoo
You are welcome! Thanks so much for sharing with me

I am so glad you happened upon the lizard picture I posted on my blog. I just devoured the pictures you have on your blog and I am smiling and inspired and so glad to have had this experience. I too believe that one must pursue the dream they have and never give up. Your photographs…….I am in awe. I too love photography and love my first canon digital. I only have it about a year and it is great.
I have not dedicated myself to studying the art of taking pictures, as you have. I am just enjoying what I do and designing greeting cards with some of my images. This is very enjoyable for me and I hope others enjoy my cards as well.
Visiting your blog has been great. I look forward to visiting again!

(Your story about yourself is in very hard to read type….I made it darker and then I could read it..
I am glad I did that!)
I am so sorry.. I didn’t realise it was hard to read. No one has ever told me before… I will have to take a look and see if I can change that. But I am so glad you visited the blog and enjoyed what you see. I think it is SO wonderful that you are enjoying your photography and going after your own dreams. Hope you will pop by again sometime. xxoo

Thanks Paul.
Really wonderful blog! And seriously some of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen. I am so happy I found you. I wish you blessings and lots of love on your journey.
What a lovely and thoughtful comment. Thank you so very much ♥
Wow, Tracie, you’re a very inspirational woman! I am glad I stopped by to check your blog out. I wish the best of luck in all your blogging endeavors for this year. Take care, love. “Shoot” for perfection! Ha, sorry, I couldn’t help it! It was just a … focal point… for a joke on a photography blog.
Hahaha.. thanks so much for the lovely comment. So glad you stopped by
” In that time, I have eaten, slept, breathed, and absorbed all things photographic”
i can imagine your eyes going “click click” instead of “blink blink”…
Really liked the pics of the seas! especially the pic of the sky and the sea with blue, orange, purple and pink
Whenever I am driving anywhere I am clicking pics in my mind, even when I don’t have the camera in my hand. I tend to see everything these days as a potential picture
Wow! I am amazed that you discovered photography so recently. Like you once did, I too often felt like an artist without a medium. I finally discovered writing as my main medium but I feel like I am only at the beginning of really crafting my style. The fact that you are so gifted as a photographer and that you only discovered photography as your medium relatively recently is very inspiring to me! Thank you for sharing your story and your beautiful work!
Hello there! What a beautiful blog you have! Thanks for stopping by mine and following my blog. Sorry it’s taken me awhile to take a peek over here. Glad I did! Keep up the beautiful work!
I’m so glad you enjoyed your time here.. come back again .. you are always welcome
I can definitely relate. While I was always interesting in taking pictures and had a poloroid as a teenager, it wasn’t until I retired that I was able to really put my heart and soul into taking pictures. My contention is the Beauty is Simple. So I just walk out my door or look out my window and snap that which strikes me. It ususlly isn’t grand, but it delights me to know end to be able to capture it. Thanks for visiting and the like of my post “Our Big Snow”. It gave me a chance to find you and your lovely work.
I think snow is really pretty but I’m glad we don’t have it. I don’t deal well with the cold. Thanks so much for visiting
Tracie,
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog.
I am grateful for every reader who shares in my “Wanderings”.
My family loves photography. Yours is gorgeous.
God bless your passion!
Heather

I am so glad you enjoy my work. Come back anytime
TRACIE, i just love your photography..its full of life, refreshing, colorful, breathtaking..OUTRAGEOUS..:)
Wow. What a stunning compliment. I’m blown away!!
Breathtaking shots! Those are HDR-pictures, right? I’m about to get a new camera and start on it. Exciting!
Thank you. I’m so glad you like my work. I do a lot of HDR. Not all my shots are HDR but I do use it about half the time.
May I ask what program you use for the HDR pictures? Also do you use a grad ND filter? I have always changed the light manually and took 5 pictures (+2 +1 0 -1 -2). But somehow it never turned out really good
I use Photomatix Pro to process the HDR. And yes, I use a lot of filters in my work. I think for a landscaper grad ND’s and full ND’s (for water movement) are essential. I sometimes use coloured filters as well. If I’m in a hurry I use the auto bracketing on my camera, but I only have 3 shot bracketing. I also bracket manually if I want more exposures. I have even experimented with up to 20 exposures, but that was for an indoor cathedral shot.
One last question.. can you reccomend any grad ND filter? (not colored) for Nikon?
I use Hoya, Kenko, Cokin, Singh-Ray & B+W. My favourite is B+W. Singh-Ray are VERY expensive, and not worth the money in my opinion. Lee has a really good reputation, but I have tried them. I shoot Nikon
Hi there! I love your blog (the pictures!) so much that I decided to nominate you for a Sunshine Award!
Greetings!
http://gesundheitsuze.wordpress.com/2013/04/23/sunshine-award-hooray/
You are so kind.. thank you… it’s very much appreciated. xxoo
Hi Tracie,
I was wondering, what do you use for a camera and lenses? you work is beautiful!
My camera is a Nikon D90. I have several lenses. 18-200mm, 10-20mm, are my most used lenses. I have a 150-500mm for the birds. A 50mm f1.8, & 35mm f1.8. And a 90mm macro. I use filters a lot, especially for the timed shots.
Thanks! I would love a macro! I haven’t used many filters, can you recommend any? I have a d5100.
It would depend on what you are trying to achieve but as a landscaper, a good polarising lens is a must and for time delay shots, a ND is critical.
Hi Tracie. I found you on Redbubble while browsing some images (waterfall ones I think) and loved your photos, then read your story which really spoke to me. I’ve had a very similar experience – always feeling creative but never quite knowing what until I had a DSLR in my hand. I started down the path of selling photography a little over a year ago, but haven’t ahd the time I’d like to devote to it due to another full time job, but I’m so pleased to see the success you seem to have had already. Given your images you certainly deserve it! Anyway, I’m in SE Queensland as well, so I just wanted to reach out and say hello. I’m looking forward to following your photographic journey. Have fun in the States!
That’s so exciting. Where abouts in QLD. Maybe we could catch up sometime.
I’m in Sandgate, north Brisbane. Whereabouts are you? I’d be up for a catch up some time if our paths cross (I’m also in the CBD a lot).
I’m out at Kingaroy but when I come to brissy I usually stay in the cbd. I will let you know next time I’m coming. I’m in the US right now
I did some travelling in the US at the end of 2011. Loved it. Looking forward to your photos!
So glad I found your blog, you are an inspiration to me & make me feel I have much to look forward to & many dreams still possible to fulfill! Thank you for sharing your wonderful words & your stunning photography!
You are so very welcome. Many of my posts are as much a reminder to myself as to anyone else. I often feel that as I get older, maybe my chances have passed me by, but I can’t dwell on thoughts like that. I feel that I still have much to offer (as do you) and we can’t let anything stand in our way.
Absolutely! It’s lovely to be reminded in such a wonderful way!
