You are simply Never too old…

A friend of mine asked me the other day to help her learn some new computer skills, which I am more than happy to do.  When she was in her 60′s, she decided to learn oil painting.  Now in her 70′s, she is quite the accomplished artist, holding regular exhibitions and doing very well for herself.  But not content to just rest on her laurels, she asked me to help her order some instructional painting DVD’s from the USA, so she can further her skills and her knowledge.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much this impresses me.  It’s my birthday in a few days, and I am turning the ripe old age of 46.  It was only 12 months ago that I decided to pursue a career in photography, and I must admit that I have worried more than once, that I might have left my run a little too late in life.  I am no longer sure that is the case.

I know a few people in their 70′s (some I am related to), who believe, and who constantly take pleasure in telling me, that they are too old to change now…. that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.  This really bugs me.  I have always been a firm believer in personal growth.  Mother Nature will attest to the fact, that if you are not growing, you are dying.  If you still have breath in your body, your work here isn’t done.

I seriously hope that when I am 70+ I am still learning… still growing as an artist… still creating, exploring, discovering.  Life is WAY to precious to be content with sitting around waiting for it to end.

Here, here, Tracie Louise; I can attest to that philosophy myself. We began to dance at socials (I was 56). Now, almost 6 years later, we compete in Dancesport Competitions and, if I do say so myself, are enjoying quite a modest success, at that. Heck, 46 seems like yesterday to me and, hopefully, 72 will not be much different… Our attitudes sure do count for a lot..! ;)

Attitude is just Everything. If we expect to get old and frail, that is what we will experience. I tell my kids all the time, I am going to be one of those 80 year old’s who jumps out of aeroplanes for fun.

Learning something new is what makes life exciting. I hope that I am learning right up till my time on earth is done. Never too old!

Good story. Since time and life are going in a single direction, there’s not a lot of choice. But to ,make a career change with all the unknowns, there’s the scary part. Good luck in your photography career. I hope that it is working out.. It’s my secret desire as well. But then it would be work…

I never was one to worry about age. I just believe in dancing through life with joy and abandon.

What a gorgeous post and photo Tracie!!
This makes me think of my mom. I try everything to get her “up” about life and try out new things but she has a stubborn belief of “too old to change now”- this frustrates me but I keep trying in hopes she will give in at some point;)! Luv and Light to you sweet friend:)!!

That’s my problem too…. I feel like a teenager on the inside, and sometimes I get shocked when I see this middle-aged woman looking back at me in the mirror.. seriously…where did she come from??? :P

Hi Tracie…. I completely agree!! If I stopped learning new things and creating things, it would be the equivalent of dying.

You continue to inspire me! :)
